How to troubleshoot video playback issues?
If the video doesn't load...
- Check the Real Python status page (status.realpython.com) to see if there are any known issues with video playback or if the website is undergoing maintenance
- Restart your browser
- Disable ad-blockers or whitelist realpython.com (we do not serve ads if you have an active subscription, but some ad-blockers can interfere with video playback)
- Ensure your browser can access Vimeo, our video hosting partner (click here for more information and firewall settings -- for example, if you're getting a "because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here" error)
- Check to see if Vimeo (our video hosting partner) has a temporary outage at www.vimeostatus.com
- Clear your browser cache and cookies
- Ensure JavaScript is enabled
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari are recommended)
- Disable any plugins, ad-blockers, or extensions that could interfere
- Try upgrading your browser to the latest version
- Try upgrading your operating system
If videos get stuck, stop, or stutter...
- This could be a network connectivity issue. Ensure you have at least a 1 Mbps connection
- Restart all devices on your network: your computer, router, and modem
- Try a different device if possible, like another computer or mobile device
- Try a different network, like your office wifi, coffee shop, mobile network
- Try selecting a different default video stream quality in your account settings
If videos have audio issues (e.g. no sound)...
- Restart your browser and your computer
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari are recommended)
- Try upgrading your browser to the latest version
- Check to ensure the site isn't muted in your browser settings
- Check to ensure system audio isn't muted
If you're getting a "player error" on Ubuntu + Firefox...
- Try installing the ffmpeg package in Linux using sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
If lesson videos don't start automatically or there's no sound (no auto-play)...
